The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) ( Thai : สํา นัก ข่าวกรอง เเ ห่ ง ชาติ) is a Thai government agency for counter-espionage and security . It serves as part of the Prime Minister's Office (OPM). The head office is located in Paruskavan Palace in Bangkok .

history

The government established the Department of Administrative Intelligence under the Cabinet of Thailand on January 1, 1954. Phao Siyanon was appointed the first director. On December 2, 1959, it was renamed the Department of Central Intelligence and renamed the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) again during the government of Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda .

In 1985, the National Intelligence Act, BE 2528 (1985) made the NIA the leading Thai intelligence agency. The reality as of 2016 was that seven Thai intelligence agencies - the NIA, Army Intelligence, Navy Intelligence, Air Force Intelligence, Supreme Command Center Intelligence, Special Branch Bureau and National Security Command Headquarters - operate largely independently of each other . In 2017, a plan was drawn up to consolidate the efforts of 27 different Thai intelligence agencies.
