history

In the late 1960s, a group around Florence Mahoney founded the Friends of the National Museum , which ultimately led to the establishment of the museum. Mahoney himself helped design the museum.

The museum is housed in a building that was previously used as the Parliament building, the British Council and the National Library, and the Bathurst Club. The museum was opened by then President Dawda Jawara on February 18, 1985, the 20th anniversary of Gambia's independence.

In 2013 the building, which is over 100 years old, underwent a two-week renovation. The funds were donated by Trust Bank Gambia Limited .
