The National Evangelical Church of Damascus ( Arabic الكنيسة الإنجيلية الوطنية) is the church of the National Evangelical Synod in Syria and Lebanon in the old town of the Syrian capital Damascus .

Location

The National Evangelical Church is located in the residential area of ​​al-Tal ("the hill", التل, DMG at-Tall ) in the Christian quarter of the old town of Damascus on Dawamneh Street (شارع الدوامنة, DMG Šāriʿ ad-Dawāmina ), one in the section between the " Firewood Canal Street" (قناية الحطب, DMG Qanāyat al-Ḥaṭab ) and Dawamneh Park (حديقة ساحة الدوامنة, DMG Ḥadīqat Sāḥat ad-Dawāmina ) in north-south direction running street, on the east side about halfway in the section mentioned.

The National Evangelical Church of Syria and Lebanon had its beginnings at the beginning of the 19th century, when Presbyterian missionaries from Great Britain and the USA were active in the then Ottoman Empire and the first Protestant congregations with Arab believers emerged in Beirut and Hasbaya . In 1860 the Presbyterian Congregation was founded in Damascus, and in 1866 the church on Dawamneh Street in Damascus was completed and opened as the first Evangelical church in present-day Syria. In 1920 the Presbyterian parish of Damascus became a member of the National Evangelical Synod of Syria and Lebanon .

architecture

The National Evangelical Church in Damascus is a small church building with a rectangular floor plan, flat, brick outer walls and a gable roof . It stands in a north-south direction, so on the eaves of Dawamneh Street. A marble plaque from 1866 and a simple cross are placed above the wooden entrance door to the south. The interior of the church is characterized by simplicity and the absence of symbols or images. There are two large, colorful mosaic windows with cross motifs in the middle on either side of the door and four on the side walls.
