Mitri Haji Athanasio

Mitri Haji Athanasio , also Metri Haji Athanasiou ( Arabic متري هاجي أثناسيو, DMG Mitrī Hāǧī Aṯanāsiyū ; * October 26, 1937 in Damascus ), is a Syrian priest of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church , who preaches in the Cathedral of Our Lady al-Niah (al-Zeitoun Church) in Damascus. He is best known for his research and publications on churches in Syria .

Life

Mitri Haji Athanasio was born on October 26, 1937 and grew up in the Bab Musalla area in the al-Midan district of Damascus . Here he attended primary and secondary school before going to Harissa ( Lebanon ), where he obtained the Lebanese and French university entrance qualification at the Melkite Seminary of St. Paul in 1958 . This was followed by a study of dogmatic theology at the Melkite seminary of Saint Anne in Jerusalem , when the old city was still under Jordanian administration. Athanasio was ordained a priest in 1963 and was given the rank of Archimandrite in 1992 .

He received his doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of Leuven . At the Sorbonne in Paris he obtained a second doctorate in philosophy with his dissertation on "The Platonic Philosopher Namasius".

Athanasio published various philosophical and theological works as an author, including a work "On the Nature of Man ", in which he deals with the philosophy of Plato and compares Greek and Arabic manuscripts. Partly in collaboration with Qutaiba Shihabi , five encyclopedic works were published: “Encyclopedia of the History and Archeology of the Patriarchate of Antioch”, “Encyclopedia of the Churches in Damascus”, “Churches and Monasteries of Damascus and its Landscape”, “Encyclopedia of Icons” and “Encyclopedia of Damascus ”. In addition, he brought out four book series, also as an author: "Faith and Life" (19 books for students and educated people, including "The vision of St. John the Apostle ", " Faith ", "The face of God in his saints " , "The Lord's Prayer ", " Saint Ephrem " and " John Chrysostom "), "Miracles of the Soul" (10 books), "The good news of Jesus for children" (8 books), "Christian education" for elementary school classes in Lebanon (6 books) and “Christian Education” for teaching in Sudan (6 books).

According to his own statements, Athanasio speaks very good French, English, ancient Greek and Latin as well as some Spanish and modern Greek in addition to his mother tongue Arabic.

Note on the name

Athanasios name Haji or Hādschī (هاجي' Beginning of word Hā' ) is not identical to the pilgrim honorary titleحاجي respectively حاجّ( Hajj , word beginning Ha ' in Christian pilgrims Jerusalem also Χατζής or Хаджи, as with Αθανασίου summary name Χατζηαθανασίου), although he sometimes inexact as "متري حاجي اثناسيو“Is quoted.
