Athanasios (new Greek Αϑανάσιος or ancient Greek Ἀϑανάσιος ; Latinized Athanasius ) is a male given name .

Origin and meaning

The name is derived from ancient Greek ἀϑάνατος athánatos and means [mainly used] 'the immortal' ( α- 'un-' and ϑάνατος thánatos 'death'). The Latin form Athanasius is the name of Saint Athanasius , doctor of the church and bishop of Alexandria (4th century), after whom later bearers of the name were often named.
