The steam locomotives of the series 06 were unit express train locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR). They were the only German locomotives with the 2'D2 ' wheel arrangement (also called Northern ).

history

With the two locomotives of the 06 series from Krupp , the most powerful, largest and heaviest express train locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn were put into operation in 1939. The vehicles were designed for heavy express train service in hilly terrain, the range of services provided for the transport of 650 t at 120 km / h. 60 km / h should be maintained on gradients of 1: 100.

The 06 series received the boiler of the series 45 and many of the series 41 the same components. The chassis with four coupled axles had a fixed wheel base of 6.75 m.

The two locomotives with the road numbers 06 001 and 06 002 were equipped with type 2'3 T 38 St. tenders .

In the test operation, the vehicles were certified to have remarkable performance and smoothness. However, the locomotives tended to derail in tight curves . As with the 45 series, the boilers developed cracks, ran pipes and torn off studs, so that the locomotives in front of the measuring wagons or scheduled trains could not convince.

Whereabouts

Because of the Second World War , the two vehicles remained. After the war there was no need for locomotives of this size, so that a necessary structural revision or reorder was not made. Both machines, which were considered to be faulty designs, were retired and scrapped by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) in Frankfurt am Main in 1951 , as the DB had refused to re-boiler them.
