The National Union ( Portuguese União Nacional , UN ) was the unity party of the Portuguese Estado Novo regime.
The party was founded in 1930 during the Ditadura Nacional ( German national dictatorship ). Officially it was not a political party , but an "organization of unity for all Portuguese". From 1934 to 1973 she always won all the seats of the Assembleia da República in all parliamentary elections .
In 1970, two years after Marcelo Caetano António de Oliveira Salazar had followed as party leader , the party name was changed to Acção Nacional Popular (German National Popular Action ). The party was dissolved after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and democratic conditions were restored.
