The National Palace Museum ( Chinese  國立 故宮 博物院  /  国立 故宫 博物院 , Pinyin Gúolì Gùgōng Bówùyùan ) is an art gallery and museum in Taipei , Taiwan .

Exhibits

Founded in Beijing in 1925 , the museum houses the world's largest collection of priceless Chinese works of art, spanning the 8,000-year history of continental East Asia. Most of the 697,490 objects were originally part of the imperial art collection, which was brought together by Qing Emperor Qianlong . The exhibits came from the Forbidden City and were brought to Taiwan by Chiang Kai-shek when he fled the mainland in 1949. Only the best pieces from the imperial collection are kept here. Even so, this treasure is far too extensive to be exhibited at once. Many of the particularly valued pieces are shown permanently. However, the majority of the collection of jade, chinaware, paintings and bronzes is regularly exchanged.

The most famous pieces from the palace museum's collection include the jade cabbage ( Chinese  《翠玉 白菜》 , Pinyin Cuìyù Báicài ) and the meat stone ( Chinese  《肉 形 石》 , Pinyin Ròuxíngshí ), both of which are detailed representations of food.

Despite the similarity of the name, it should not be confused with the " Palace Museum " in the Forbidden City in Beijing , People's Republic of China . Both institutions have the same origin; the separation is the result of the Chinese civil war .

particularities

The museum is the only museum in Taiwan whose director is appointed by the Prime Minister and reports directly to the central government.

It attracts millions of visitors annually. In 2016 the number of visitors was 6,142,892.

On November 13, 2018, considerations became known that the palace museum should be closed for three years from the end of 2020 in order to be able to carry out renovation work.
