The Cabo Pulmo National Park is a National Marine Park . It is located on the Mexican peninsula of Baja California . Bahía Pulmo has the oldest of the only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America .
geography
The Cabo Pulmo National Park is located between Pulmo Point and Los Frailes about 100 km north of Cabo San Lucas .
development
The Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo declared the area around Cabo Pulmo a national marine park on June 5, 1995 .
Since the 1980s, the reef has been heavily influenced by environmental factors, including hurricanes and the effects of medium and strong El Niño events. In the early 1990s, the central areas of the reef had a live Pocillopora coverage of ~ 40%. Between 1997 and 2003 the reef lost almost 50% of its coral population due to various natural events such as four hurricanes and the strong El Niño influences in 1997/1998.
