Bob Lark

Robert James "Bob" Lark (* around 1960) is an American jazz trumpeter (also known as flugelhorn ) and university professor, who is best known for his collaboration with Phil Woods .

Lark graduated from Ohio State University in the early 1980s , where he received his bachelor's degree. He also studied at North Texas State University , where he also belonged to the respective jazz ensembles and big bands with which he first recorded in 1981 and 1985. In 1986 he toured with the One O'Clock Lab band in Australia . After the master's degree followed doctorate at North Texas State on the structure and form of solos by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (1994).

He taught first as Assistant Professor of Music at Emporia State University , Kansas, from the 90s on jazz trumpet, furthermore jazz pedagogy, jazz style and history of jazz at DePaul University, where he also leads the big band there . In 1995 this appeared under Larks direction with Clark Terry as a guest soloist in Chicago ; In 1997 he recorded his debut album First Steps , on which u. a. Paul McKee (trombone), Bob Mintzer , Larry Novak (piano), Sharay Reed (bass) and Tim Davis (drums) performed. In 2004 the production Suggestions followed , with Mark Colby (tenor saxophone), Jim McNeely (piano), Kelly Sill (bass) and Joel Spencer (drums).

In the same year he appeared with DePaul University Jazz Ensemble and Phil Woods as a guest soloist at the Chicago jazz club The Jazz Showcase ( Woodlands ); In 2005 he made recordings with Woods as a quintet ( In Her Eyes , Bob Lark / Phil Woods Quintet with Jim McNeely, Steve Gilmore , Bill Goodwin ) and in 2006 another recording from the Jazz Showcase ( Swingchronicity ) with Phil Woods and the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble . Woods was also involved in Lark's own album, Cathy's Song , which was created in 2007. He has also worked with the university ensemble with soloists such as Louie Bellson , Bob Brookmeyer , Jim McNeely, Jeff Hamilton , Slide Hampton , Randy Brecker , Tom Harrell , Ira Sullivan , Mark Colby , Bobby Shew and Frank Wess . In the field of jazz he was involved in 24 recording sessions between 1981 and 2013. In 2010 he was honored by Down Beat with the Jazz Education Achievement Award for his jazz pedagogical work .
