The Kéran National Park is a national park in the north of Togo . It is located south of the Oti Wildlife Reserve at 114 to 260 m above sea level and covers an area of 163,640 hectares. The north main road through Togo to Burkina Faso runs through the northern part of the park.
The Kéran National Park covered by Pterocarpus erinaceus , Detarium microcarpum , Daniellia oliveri and shea dominated tree savannahs, by anogeissus leiocarpa dominated dry forests , gallery forests , sparsely vegetated plains with rocky terrain and areas that regularly by the Koumongou, a tributary of the Oti be flooded, . During the dry season, the Koumongou consists only of standing puddles, but in the rainy season it flows quickly. The national park also includes the small wetland Mare aux Lions , which is located near Koumongou and is frequented by birds and mammals. 56% of the area of the park is forest, 42% bushland. The annual precipitation is 1300 mm.
Here live buffalo , hippos , Kob and - hartebeest . The national park is an Important Bird Area . Particularly noteworthy are the large, conspicuous species of birds, such as the saddle stork , the Stanley bustard or the black-horned beak , whose population includes up to 60 animals. In the gallery forest living at the northernmost come Narinatrogone and Oriole singer of the country before.
Although Kéran National Park was well protected until 1991 with enforcement guards including speed restrictions for vehicles passing through the park on the main road, serious problems arose after the political upheavals. Indiscriminate hunting, uncontrolled land settlement and theft of firewood spread.
