NGC 6118 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sc in the constellation Serpens north of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 72 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6172 .
The Type Ib Supernova 2004dk was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 14, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
