NGC 6140 is a 11.2 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (s) cd in the constellation of Dragon . It is estimated to be 49 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on June 3, 1788 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "cF, pL, iE".
