NGC 6151 is one of eight to ten stars existing asterism in the constellation of bird of paradise .

On June 29, 1835, John Herschel mistakenly mistook it for a galaxy during an observation and thus gained an entry in the catalog. John Herschel noted “vF and S; is pointed to by 2 small stars 9th mag and 14th mag; the star 9th mag is the only one of that magnitude within 6 ′ ".
