NGC 6164 and NGC 6165 designate the two bright radiation lobes of a 6.7 mag bright bipolar emission nebula in the constellation Winkelpunkt , which is about 1236  parsecs away from Earth. It was discovered on July 1, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "Neb violently suspected immediately preceding a double star".
