NGC 6181 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBc in the constellation Hercules . It is around 112 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of around 80,000 light years.

The object was discovered on April 28, 1788 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope and was later included in his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
