NGC 6204 is a galactic open star cluster in the constellation Altar . In the sky it is only about 6 arc minutes away from the further open star cluster Hogg 22 , from which it differs in its older age and shorter distance. More recent studies locate the cluster with the Trumpler classification I2p due to isochronous fits at a distance of around 3500 light years .
The star cluster was discovered on May 13, 1826 by James Dunlop , who noted while observing with a 9-inch reflecting telescope: “seven or eight small stars in a group, about 1 ′ diameter, with a minute line of stars on the north side ".
