NGC 6208 is an open cluster (type definition "II1m") in the constellation Altar and about 940 Parsecs from Earth. It was discovered on July 28, 1834 by James Dunlop with a 9-inch reflecting telescope, which produced “a round, faint nebula, about 1 ′ diameter, with three small stars in it; a bright star south of the nebula "noted.

During two observations with an 18-inch reflector telescope in 1847, John Herschel noted “a pretty insulated milky way cluster, class VII of large stars; 8 ′ diameter; stars 9..12th magnitude "and" cluster class VII; rich; not much compressed in the middle; more than fills field; stars 11.14th likes but chiefly small “.
