NGC 6231 is the name of an open star cluster in the constellation Scorpio . The object has an apparent brightness of 2.6 mag and an angular expansion of 14 arc minutes and consists of young stars of the spectral classes B and O. It was discovered by Giovanni Battista Hodierna around 1654 .
