NGC 6239 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SB (s) b in the constellation Hercules . It is estimated to be 49 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on April 12, 1788 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope and was later added to his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
