NGC 6215 is a 11.1 likes bright spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Altar at the southern sky . It is around 65 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 50,000 light years .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6215A and NGC 6221 .
The object was discovered on July 9, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope , which said "pretty faint, round, very gradually a little brighter in the middle, has a yellow 5th mag star preceding it, approx. 1m 19s in RA, and 3 ′ or 4 ′ south “.
