NGC 6196 = IC 4615 is a 13.0 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is an estimated 428 million light years from the Milky Way and about 250,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6194 , NGC 6197 , IC 4614 .

The object was discovered by Albert Marth on July 9, 1864 . Due to a mistake in Marth's position, the observation of Guillaume Bigourdan on August 28, 1886 under IC 4615 led to an entry in the index catalog .
