NGC 6197 = IC 4616 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Hercules in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 448 million light years from the Milky Way and about 170,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 6194 , NGC 6196 , IC 4614 .

The object was discovered by Albert Marth on July 9, 1864 . Due to an error in Marth's position, the observation of Guillaume Bigourdan on August 28, 1886 under IC 4616 led to an entry in the index catalog .
