IC 4605 is a reflection nebula that lies in the constellation Scorpio , about 1 ° below the star Antares . The nebula was discovered in 1882 by the astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard with the help of a telescope and was later listed by Johan Dreyer in his index catalog .

Further research has shown that the nebula is around 393 light years from Earth and is part of the Rho-Ophiuchi molecular cloud illuminated by the star HD 148605. The bluish color of the nebula comes from this star, a young blue main sequence star with the spectral classification B3V.
