The 1901 MLB season marked the first season of the modern era of Major League Baseball (MLB), which began with the formation of the American League (AL). The first winners in the AL were the Chicago White Stockings , and the winning team in the National League was the Pittsburgh Pirates . Since the World Series , in which the AL and NL winners meet, was only introduced two years later, there was still no MLB champion in 1901. Statistically the best team across all leagues were the Pirates from the National League.
