The 1909 MLB season was the eighth season of Major League Baseball (MLB).
For the third time in a row, the Detroit Tigers won the American League (AL). The team of manager Hughie Jennings finished the regular season with 3½ games ahead of the Philadelphia Athletics .
In the National League (NL), after three years of dominance by the Chicago Cubs , the Pittsburgh Pirates had a new champion, who ended the season 6½ games ahead of the Cubs. For the Pirates it was the fourth title and the first since the 1903 season .
The Pirates won the 1909 World Series at the end of the season, celebrating their first World Series title. For the defeated Tigers it was the third World Series participation in which they left the field as a loser.
