NGC 6226 is a 13.1 mag bright galaxy of the Hubble-type S? pec in the constellation of Dragon and about 259 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest on September 24, 1862 . Due to an error in the position information, the observation by Lewis A. Swift on July 9, 1886, despite an identical description under NGC 6202, led to a second entry in the catalog.
