NGC 6172 = IC 1213 is a 12.8 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Snake north of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 226 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 6118 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2007bj was observed here.
The object was discovered on June 21, 1884 by Édouard Stephan . Due to an error in Stephen's position, the observation by Lewis A. Swift on April 19, 1890 under IC 1213 led to an entry in the index catalog .
