NGC 6257 is a 14.4 mag bright spiral-shaped Low Surface Brightness Galaxy of the Hubble-type Sc in the constellation Hercules . It is estimated to be 217 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on May 16, 1831 .
