The Ush National Park ( Ukrainian Ужанський національний природний парк Uschanskyj nazionalnyj pryrodnyj park ) is a national park in Ukraine named after the Ush River . It is located in the Velykyj Bereznyj district in the Transcarpathian Oblast , on the border with Poland and Slovakia . The park was established on August 5, 1999 and has an area of 391,593 km². Since 2007 the national park has been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage under the name " Primeval Beech Forests and Old Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe " and of the Eastern Carpathian Biosphere Reserve .

history

As early as 1908, when Transcarpathia was still part of Austria-Hungary , a nature reserve (331.8 ha) was established in the upper valley of the Stuschichanka in order to protect the beech forest landscape. At the same time, a forest reserve (14.9 ha) was created in the upper Usch valley . Between 1919 and 1938, Transcarpathia was part of Czechoslovakia . During this time, both reserves were expanded significantly. In addition, another reserve was created around Mount Jawirnik . After the Second World War, all nature conservation in the region was given up and a massive timber industry was operated. In 1974, during the Soviet Union, a forest protection zone (2,542 ha) was established. In 1995 this forest protection zone was upgraded to a landscape protection area and in 1999 finally to a national park.

geography

The national park is located on the Ush valleys and their tributaries in the western foothills of the Ukrainian Carpathians . The highest point is the Kinchyk Bukowskij ( 1251  m ). The national park has four altitude zones, which are characterized by beech and alder forests and at an altitude of over 1000 meters by alpine meadows. The climate is temperate with annual rainfall around 900 mm.

Flora and fauna

There are over 1500 plant species in the national park. About 22 of them are endemic. 52 species, including 23 orchid species, are protected at national level. Large mammals include red deer, wild boars, foxes and badgers. In addition, 114 bird species live in the national park.
