The National Theater of Namibia ( English The National Theater of Namibia ) is the state theater in the Namibian capital Windhoek . The National Theater promotes the development, maintenance and care of the art of acting in Namibia; among other things through a youth development program. It was founded on August 15, 1989 under its current name and structure as the “Non-Profit Society”, but was previously known as the South West Africa Performing Arts Council . It is located in the Windhoek-Central district , right next to the National Gallery of Namibia .
The National Theater is financed through donations, state subsidies and entrance fees. In the 1990s the financial means were very limited, so that performances only took place irregularly. A regular program has been in use since the early 200s and international plays are performed alongside Namibian plays , operas , concerts and musicals .
The theater consists of various rehearsal rooms as well as the main hall with 471 seats and a smaller hall with 250 seats.
