Nations Cup (Rugby)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nations Cup has been a rugby union tournament for men's national teams that has been held annually since 2006 . In addition to Portugal, the reserve team from Argentina and the team from Russia took part in the first edition in Lisbon . The tournament has been held in Bucharest since 2007 . The tournament is part of a strategic plan of the International Rugby Board , which aims to promote the sport in countries where rugby still plays a minor role. The reserve teams of the teams from the first tier should gain more game practice and teams from the second and third strength classes should have the opportunity to compete with high-quality teams.

In 2007 the tournament was expanded to six teams. Russia and Portugal no longer took part, instead Georgia , Namibia , Romania and South Africa's reserve team , the Emerging Springboks , were accepted. In 2008, Uruguay replaced Argentina's second team and Russia replaced Namibia. In 2009 Georgia took part in the Churchill Cup , and this time the Emerging Springboks were also missing. These two teams were replaced by the reserve teams of France and Scotland.
