history

The harmony

The Natural History Museum stands on the site of a formerly marshy lake in the city moat near the outer bridge gate , which was demolished in 1832. In 1833, the Harmonie was built as a club location for the Harmonie Society, founded in 1827, in the classical style. In order to create space for the new Max Bridge in place of the previous bridge over the Main, the Harmonie was shortened by 5 meters in 1958.

The collection

The merchant Ludwig Schuler , of the late 19th century on the islands of Reunion and Madagascar worked, sent Vogelbälger for stuffing his brothers Frederick and William Schuler, arguing that bird collection Schuler was donated to 1892, the city of Schweinfurt. The collection was initially housed in the town hall's offices and later, due to lack of space, in a building on Brückenstrasse. In 1934 she came to the local history museum set up by the city in the old grammar school and was looked after by the natural science association . During the war years, the Schuler bird collection was relocated and it was only in 1952 that it was made accessible to the public again in the newly opened museum. However, in 1959 it had to be returned to the depot due to structural changes. The collection has been in harmony since 1988 and is looked after by the municipal collections .

Diorama showcases

The Schuler brothers' collection is exhibited with 300 birds, mainly representatives of the European continent. The exhibits are housed in numerous diorama cabinets, which are modeled on the species-appropriate biotopes . The adaptation of the species to their habitats is emphasized and the dependence on their existence is made clear. Ornithological topics such as bird migration , bird egg , anatomical features or the evolution of birds are dealt with on display boards .
