The Bautzen Nature Park is located in the southeast of the urban area of Bautzen . It cannot be traced back to the work of a horticultural artist and therefore not a park in the true sense of the word.

The park, which should not be confused with the nature reserve category, is in its topography an agricultural boundary area with the character of a stream valley forest and was therefore used as a public open space by the population of the eastward growing city from 1900. However, the decisive step towards becoming a destination was not taken until 1913 with the construction of the inn and the construction of the pond, as historical maps show. It stands to reason that the construction of the pond was financed and realized with the help of state regulatory measures for water bodies. The flood damage to the Spree in 1860 and 1897 could have been the decisive factor.

With the help of a dam, the Binnewitz water was dammed, and the resulting pond was initially used as a bathing establishment. The use as a gondola pond lasted longer. After the complete neglect, the repair of the pond systems began in 1984.

The inn in the nature park also had a checkered history. From 1922 to 1927 it was used as an emergency supply for the Quakers and from 1933 as a children's home. In 1945, parts of the German Fliegerstaffel moved into the buildings of the Gasthaus Quartier. The arable land east of the nature park served as a runway. After the end of the war, the buildings were used again as a children's home. In 1958 the inn was able to reopen. In this context, the leisure activities in the nature park were enriched with a children's playground and an animal enclosure.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the nature park was increasingly abandoned to decay and neglect. After the political change in 1989, the city of Bautzen became the owner of the nature park. But it wasn't until August 1998 that the restaurant was reopened in the nature park. As a result, the areas in the Kerbtal of the Binnewitz Water increasingly came back into public interest.

The city of Bautzen made various attempts to revitalize the area of the nature park. In the years 2003/04 the new conception of the nature park could be realized on the basis of a diploma thesis.

In the foreground for the design was the profitable combination of use for recreation and leisure with the interests of nature conservation.

The theme for the design was, among other things, the adjoining school observatory "Johannes Franz" . The shape of the main paths in the nature park corresponds roughly to the constellation of Virgo . Granite pillars symbolize the individual stars in the constellation.

With this economical development, consideration was primarily taken of the extremely natural vegetation. The new construction of the bridges over the Binnewitz water enables the visitor to experience a natural area close to the city again.
