The Mercurago Lagoni Natural Park , established in 1980, is a Piedmont nature reserve in the hilly moraine area of Mercurago, a district of Arona . It includes several lakes of different sizes with aquatic and marsh plants.

Landscape aspects

A little away from the center of Arona, on the moraine hills that surround Lake Maggiore , there is the Mercurago Lagoni Park, which includes the Mercurago peat pits, some pastures used for thoroughbred horse breeding and numerous wooded areas.

Affiliated areas

The protected territory includes the Fondotoce nature reserve and the Dormelletto reed reserve. The Site of Community Importance GGB Lagoni di Mercurago (IT1150002) was established.

Archaeological remains

Remains of prehistoric settlements dating back to the Bronze Age and remains of some Roman houses (domus) were found in the area. An interesting archaeological area concerns the prehistoric Terramare culture : in 1860 the first pile building in Italy as well as a pirogue cut in wood and three wooden wheels were found in the peat pit of the Lagone . The wheels are of two types: solid wheels for transport and light spoked wheels that are suitable for a horse-drawn war chariot. A plaster cast has been preserved from the wood materials, because after leaving the protective peat layer, their decomposition process began.
