Nature reserve Niederwaldrelikt Kehl

The nature reserve Niederwaldrelikt Kehl with 9.2  hectares is located south of Hellefeld in the urban area of Sundern and in the Hochsauerlandkreis . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the district council of the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2019 with the Sundern landscape plan . Before that, the area was part of the Sundern nature reserve from 1993 . The NSG is surrounded by landscape protection areas. In the north, west and south there are grassland areas and in the east spruce forest.

When NSG is one of Niederwald use emerged mixed oak forest interspersed with beech, rowan and birch. The forest stagnates in southwest to southern exposure on the relatively steep slope of the Kehl mountain ridge. The forest shows a predominantly dense herb layer rich in dwarf shrubs and ferns.

The landscape plan shows the nature reserves with coppice in the city of Sundern: “There are still numerous, mostly well-developed coppice areas in the planning area. As relics of a historical form of forest management, they represent evidence of the cultural landscape of this area. With the resumption and continuation of the management form typical of the Niederwald forest, the present area takes on a special position within a Niederwald network. "

Protection purpose

According to the landscape plan, the designation took place:

  • "Protection of a valuable forest (management) type, from a faunistic, vegetation and cultural-historical point of view;"
  • "Preservation and optimization of a species-rich coppice forest area through management adapted to the type of forest."
  • "The NSG also serves to sustainably secure the occurrence of rare animal and plant species."

Development measure

In the landscape plan, the following was laid down as an additional development measure: "In order to maintain the traditional forest management method, the use of the coppice forest on the area must be continued or resumed within the framework of contractual regulations (Section 26 LG)."
