Veengraben nature reserve

The Veengraben nature reserve (identifier KLE-018) is an approx. 13 ha nature reserve in the Kleve district near Asperden near Goch , which was placed under protection in 1982.

The nature reserve extends for about 1.3 km in parallel along federal highway 9 in the north-west of the city of Goch. The name of the nature reserve is given by the Veengraben, which also runs parallel to the B9 and flows through the area. The Veengraben is a former, silted Niersschleife which leads only periodically water. The nature reserve has not been used for agriculture or timber since 1982, so that there are moist to wet alder and oak forests with a high proportion of dead and old wood in the area. There are also wet meadow areas and tall herbaceous meadows scattered in small areas . Former fish ponds, which were renatured in 2011, are located within the NSG.

Special plant species occurring in the area include the marsh fern , the stiff sedge and the water feather . In the ponds there are among other things the Moderlieschen or the nine-prickly stickleback . It is also the habitat of various bat and bird species, such as the broad-winged bat or the kingfisher .
