Asperden is a district of the city of Goch in the Kleve district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) with 2,340 inhabitants (June 30, 2016) .

history

The place Asperden was first mentioned around 1100. The place name Asperden (Espenrodung), a clearing name , can be traced back to the clearing time of the forests. Asperden lies on the edge of the Klever Reichswald .

St. Vincentius

The St. The Catholic parish church St. Vincentius , consecrated to Vincent of Valencia , can be traced back to 1255. At the beginning of the 14th century the church was incorporated into the Graefenthal monastery . The new building, erected in the 15th century, was completely demolished in 1893 after a new church in neo-Romanesque style was built on the opposite side of the street. Today the parish of St. Vincentius still has a kindergarten, a youth home and the Don Bosco elementary school.

On April 27, 2008, Günter Leuken, the last pastor of the community for the time being, was adopted. He worked in Asperden for 34 years and retired at the age of 75. The path next to the church is named after him today. With Pastor Leuken, the long line of local pastors for St. Vincentius breaks off because a successor is not planned.

Graefenthal Monastery

Graefenthal Monastery (gate building)

The Graefenthal estate is located northwest of Asperden an der Niers . The former Cistercian convent is a foundation of Count Otto II (Geldern) . In 1251 Otto's wife was buried in the church choir. The remaining monastery and farm buildings were completed around 1258. After the abbey was destroyed in 1474 and extensive renovations in 1711, the monastery was demolished after secularization in 1802. The abbey buildings still preserved are located within an extensive walled area.

Sunken monastery

A little further north, on the other side of the Niers, there used to be a Roman Burgus with a smaller commercial settlement next to the field name "Sunken Monastery" . The Burgus Asperden can no longer be seen in the area today.

In the nearby Klever Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town Asperden, the so-called battle in the Reichswald took place in February 1945 of the Second World War . After this battle, the Allies were able to build a bridgehead over the Rhine near Wesel and thus take the Ruhr area.

After 1945

On June 28, 1946, the Asperden administration, consisting of the municipalities of Kessel , Asperden, Hassum and Hommersum, became independent again from Goch with the approval of the military government . The settlement community of Nierswalde, which arose on the Reichswald area of the office, was incorporated into the Asperden office by government decree in 1953. The final end for the Asperden office came with the reorganization law of March 11, 1969. It was dissolved and the independent communities, including Asperden, have been districts of the city of Goch since July 1, 1969.
