Naushon Iceland (German Naushoninsel ) is an island of Elizabeth Islands in the US state of Massachusetts . At 19.18 km², Naushon Island is the largest of the Elizabeth Islands; there are 0.63 inhabitants per square kilometer. There are 35 houses on Naushon Island, most of which are on the east end.
history
From 1752 to 1811 the island was owned by James Bowdoin , the governor of the former Commonwealth of Massachusetts . After his death, the island passed by succession to his successor, James Bowdoin III , who owned an estate on Naushon Island.
In 1842 the US railroad magnate John Murray Forbes bought the island with his business partner William W. Swain. The island became a retreat for the Forbes family, who made their fortune by doing business in the People's Republic of China . Gradually, John M. Forbes bought more and more property on the island from his business partner Swain, until the island was finally owned by the Forbes family. After John M. Forbes' death in 1898, his five children ran the island. Later the island went to his company.
Former US Secretary of State John Kerry has been vacationing on Naushon Island since he was a teenager. John Kerry is not a direct descendant of John Murray Forbes, but of his uncle.
Geography and description
Naushon and the smaller islands of Uncatena Island , Nonamesset Island , Monohansett Island , Weepecket Island and other surrounding islets are privately owned. Only Tarpaulin Cove , West Beach, and Kettle Cove beaches are open to the public. In the northeast, the island is in the slipstream and is therefore relatively storm-proof. At the mouth of Hadley Harbor, the island is more open. Many paths are unsurfaced and lead through the beech forests . The Tarpaulin Cove Light is located at Tarpaulin Cove .
