The Naval Aircraft Factory N3N is a two-seat biplane that was mainly used as a training aircraft in the US Navy . The N3N was built at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia . It was built both as a land plane and a seaplane . The seaplane variant had a large central float and two small floats on the wing tips. The land plane had a fixed landing gear. The airframe was a metal structure covered with fabric.
history
The N3N were powered by a Wright R-760 -2 Whirlwind radial engine with 235 hp. Many of these engines were also built at the Naval Aircraft Factory.
The first flight took place in August 1935. Deliveries to the US Navy began in June 1936. A total of 816 copies were built at the Naval Aircraft Factory. During the Second World War , they continued to be used for pilot training. At the time, the US Navy's novice pilot training aircraft were painted completely yellow. Therefore the N3N got the name "Canary" (canary bird), unofficially it was also called "Yellow Peril" ( yellow danger ).
In 1941 four machines were handed over to the US Coast Guard . The last machine was taken out of service with the US Naval Academy in 1961 .
