The Nazaré Canyon is the name given to the submarine canyon that runs almost at right angles to Nazaré off the west coast of Portugal in the eastern Atlantic . In this deep-sea trench with a maximum depth of at least 5000 m and a length of 230 km, massive giant waves form after violent storms , which the west wind presses onto the land.

Waves up to 30 m high can pile up off the coast if the weather conditions allow. Many surfers from all over the world come to Portugal, especially in the winter months, to catch a particularly high wave. The big-wave surfing on the waves in front of Nazaré was mainly due to the Hawaiian specialists Garrett McNamara famous, who has set up here on January 30, 2013, present a world record by defeating a 30-meter-high wave.

The city council of the 15,000 inhabitants of Nazaré is marketing the surf spot on Praia do Norte as a tourist attraction.
