List of deep sea trenches
The list of deep-sea trenches contains 30 deep-sea trenches (created by faults) or deep-sea channels (created by subduction) of the earth with a depth of at least 6,000 meters. For each trench, the greatest depth, the length of the trench, the ocean in which the trench is located and the continental plates that meet there are given. Six trenches, the Mariana Trench (up to 11,034 meters), the Tongagraben (up to 10,882 meters), the Boningraben (up to 10,554 meters), the Kurilengraben (up to 10,542 meters), the Philippinengraben (up to 10,540 meters) and the Kermadec Trench (up to 10,047 meters) have a depth of more than 10,000 meters; they are all located in the western Pacific . Ten other trenches are deeper than 8,000 meters. The longest trench is the Aleutian Trench in the northern Pacific, over 3,000 kilometers in length.
An elevation of the sea floor is called a threshold or sea ridge (deep sea ridge).
Explanation
- Name of the trench: Give the name of the trench. An alternative name is given in (brackets).
- Greatest depth in meters (name): states the greatest depth of the trench in meters and, if applicable, its name. The depth information is based either on echo sounding or on wire sounding .
- Further depths in meters (name): Provides further depths of the trench in meters and, if applicable, their names.
- Length: states the length of the trench in kilometers.
- Ocean: Name the ocean in which the trench is located.
- Continental plates : Names the two continental plates that meet at the interface or the corresponding deep-sea basin.
Note: The list can be sorted : by clicking on a column header, the list is sorted according to this column, clicking twice reverses the sorting. Any desired sorting combination can be achieved by clicking two columns in a row.
