The Nazca booby ( Sula granti ) is a tropical sea bird. The species was previously assigned to the masked booby as the subspecies Sula dactylatra granti , but was raised to the rank of a separate species by Pitman and Jehl in 1998, which was recognized by the American Ornithologists' Union in 2000 and confirmed by DNA tests in 2002.
distribution
The Nazca booby is found in the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California and the Mexican city of Colima to Ecuador . It breeds on the East Pacific Galápagos Islands , the Ecuadorian Isla de la Plata and the Colombian island of Malpelo as well as on the Clipperton Island and the Mexican Revillagigedo Islands .
features
Compared to the masked booby, the Nazca booby is smaller and has a significantly smaller, shorter and flatter beak that is orange and not yellow. Its feet are smaller and it has a longer tail and wings than the masked booby. Also, the sexual dimorphism is pronounced clearly in Nazca boobies. Typically the Nazca Booby nests on cliffs and steep slopes, while the Masked Booby prefers flat terrain for nest building. The breeding colonies of the Nazcat Booby are always very close to the coast, those of the Masked Booby further inland. If both species nest together, pairs form preferentially among individuals who are particularly similar (positive assortative pairing ).
Danger
Since the range of the species and the number of individuals is relatively large (more than 20,000 km² and approx. 30,000 specimens in 2008), the species is classified as not endangered by the IUCN (“Least Concern”).
