The Nee Islets are a group of nine small rock islands at the entrance to Doubtful Sound in the Southland region on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The archipelago and the main island were named by the Spanish navigator and expedition leader Alessandro Malaspina di Mulazzo after the French botanist Luis Née , who accompanied him on his voyages.

geography

The Nee Islets is located on the north side of the entrance to Doubtful Sound and south of the southwestern tip of Secretary Iceland , a few hundred meters from the coast of Secretary Iceland away. The archipelago extends over a length of around 1.5 km in north-north-west-south-south-east direction and over a width of 850 m. The northernmost of the islands, Nee Island , is also the main island and at 335 m × 266 m by far the largest island in the group.

A good one kilometer to the south-east is the group of islands of the Shelter Islands and behind them Bauza Island .

history

On February 25, 1793, the Spaniard Alessandro Malaspina di Mulazzo reached the Doubtful Sound on his scientific expedition and had it mapped by his cartographer Felipe Bauzá y Cañas . Numerous Spanish names testify to these days, such as Malaspina Reach , Pendulo Reach , Espinosa Point or Marcaciones Point .

Flora and fauna

New Zealand fur seals live on the islands .
