Luis Née

Luis Née (* around 1734 in Perray near Rambouillet ; † October 5, 1807 in Madrid ) was a botanist born in France who lived and worked most of the time in Spain and from 1789 to 1794 participated in the expedition of Alessandro Malaspina di Mulazzo .

Life before the Malaspina expedition

Before joining the expedition, Née had already done very intensive botanical research in southern Spain and this experience likely led to his being selected to take part in the expedition. In 1784 he was commissioned to set up a botanical garden in Pamplona . From 1785 to 1786, Née carried out further botanical studies in Navarre and collected around 1,200 samples that were sent to the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid . On February 4, 1789, Née was commissioned by King Charles IV to take part in the planned Malaspina expedition as a botanist.

The Malaspina expedition

Née was one of three scientists who took part in the Malaspina expedition from 1789 to 1794 together with Antonio de Pineda and Thaddäus Haenke . At the age of 55 at the start of the expedition, he was the oldest of the three participating scientists. Née collected an estimated 12,000 plant specimens during the expedition. Haenke and Née seem to have hardly worked together during the expedition and rather to have been in competition with one another.

Life after the expedition

After returning to Spain, Née tried to organize and describe his collections. He was put under pressure by Antonio José Cavanilles , director of the Botanical Gardens in Madrid, to make his collections accessible to him in order to speed up this work. From the initially tense relationship between the two botanists, a friendly relationship seems to have developed. Little is known about the rest of his life. Allegedly he later returned to France.

Species described by Née

The International Plant Names Index lists 25 species described by Née, of which 23 are from the beech family (Fagaceae) and one each from the mint family (Lamiaceae) and banana family (Musaceae):

Honors

The plant genera Neea Ruiz & Pav. And Neeopsis Lundell from the family of the wonder flower plants (Nyctaginaceae) are named after Née .
