Negro Matapacos , roughly in German "Schwarzer Bullenkiller" († August 26, 2017) was a Chilean dog that became known through its participation in the student protests in Santiago de Chile in 2010/2011 . His features included his black fur and the red scarf he wore tied around his neck.

Life

The dog became known in university circles in Santiago, especially at the universities of Santiago (Usach) , Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTEM) and Central (Ucen) . During the student protests in 2011 , the dog became known for taking part in street protests in which members of the Chilean Carabineros were attacked, thus gaining sympathy among the demonstrators. The dog took part in numerous protests, so his fans often photographed him and set up a Facebook profile for him, among other things.

Although the dog was considered a street dog, Negro Matapacos, despite his presence on various university campuses and streets of Santiago, was under the care of María Campos, who adopted and fed him in 2009, had a bed for him in her apartment, regularly tied him with fresh scarves and also blessed regularly when leaving the house. After taking part in street demonstrations, several media outlets also dubbed him the "Chilean Loukanikos " because of his similarities to the dog that became famous during protests in Greece between 2010 and 2012 .

Negro Matapacos died on August 26, 2017 of natural causes in the presence of veterinarians and his supervisor. Several sources report that at the time of his death he left 32 pups with 6 different bitches.

During the protests in Chile in 2019 , the image of Negro Matapacos became known again because he appeared in street demonstrations on various posters, stickers, wall paintings, but also in the form of paper mache sculptures. There were demands for a statue of the dog to be installed in a public place.
