The August Eckhoff shipyard is a shipyard in the Hoopte district of the city of Winsen (Luhe) .

history

The shipyard and the attached carpentry business was founded in 1872 by the brothers August and Christoph Eckhoff. At that time, the company premises were still on the Ilmenau and only wood was used. The yard was relocated three times and it was only after the port of Stöckte was dredged that it moved to its current location in Hoopte in 1899. Today Christian Eckhoff leads the shipyard in the 4th generation and repairs inland vessels and sports boats of all kinds on the slipway .

Creation of the port and the shipyard

The actual harbor basin is the result of several dike breaches in 1509 and 1529, creating a deep water surface here, which was enlarged by the dike breach in 1814. The Stöckter Hafen was diked in 1887 and from then on served raftsmen and inland waterway boats as a shelter and overnight port and also for unloading and loading goods.

The actual shipyard area was increased in 1908 and the fourth shipyard site today was created. Up until that time Eckhoff had only built wooden ships, now the steel construction of inland ships began .

By 1954 the company had grown to 20 employees and initially mainly built barges. The first machines were procured in 1912 and in 1924 the Eckhoff shipyard was connected to the power grid . Today's slipway was built in 1926 and rebuilt and enlarged several times until 1964. The company was expanded step by step, in 1948 the workshop and in 1955 the office building with iron storage and the Schnürboden . In 1969 a used harbor crane was installed.

In 1973 the Ilmenau barrage was built at the mouth of the Ilmenau into the Elbe, protecting the Ilmenau, the harbor and the shipyard from flooding. In 1983 the Port of Stöckter was designated as a port by the Waterways and Shipping Directorate (WSD) North in Kiel and has been a private transshipment port ever since. With this, the port has lost part of its former importance.

An additional mainstay for the shipyard developed from the 1980s on with repairs and paint work on pleasure boats and houseboats. In addition, around 50 spaces for winter storage are offered on the company premises.

The Stöckter Hafen was acquired by the federal authorities in the 1990s by Hermann Vaick and the shipyard owner Christian Eckhoff. Eckhoff needs his share of the property for the shipyard and boat storage and Vaick builds a jetty for berths for leisure boats. As a result, more life and traffic returned to the port, from which the shipyard also benefited.

2007 Melpomene youth project

Under the professional guidance of the shipyard owner Christian Eckhoff, the sailing ship Melpomene was repaired and overhauled from 2007 to get it going for youth camps. The 31 t mizzen sailor with a flat bottom was built in 1895 with a length of 18.45 and width of 4.1 meters at the Boizenburg shipyard Ernst Nobody and is one of the last of these ships. It is part of the maritime heritage of the Hamburg metropolitan region. The youth project was started through the agency of the economic development agency of the district of Harburg (WLH) and carried out by the organization " Quäker-Häuser ", a non-profit society for social work. This company has been operating the motor sailer Jannie on the Elbe and Baltic Sea since 2003 .

The Melpomene is an employment project for young people without an apprenticeship position. With harbor festivals in Stöckte, money was raised for the youth project.
