Neilson & Company was a locomotive factory in Glasgow , Scotland . The factory also operated under the names Kerr, Mitchell & Neilson , Neilson, Reid & Company , Kerr, Neilson & Company and Neilson & Mitchell .

The company was founded in 1836 by Walter Neilson and James Mitchell to manufacture steam engines for ships and stationary use. Locomotive manufacturing began in 1843 for local railways. Tank locomotives in particular were sold successfully, so that in 1855 the production of steam engines was superfluous and ended.

Because of the intense competition between locomotive factories in the United States at the turn of the century, many smaller companies were unable to survive in the long term. That is why Neilson & Company merged with Dübs and Company and Sharp, Stewart & Co. in 1903 to form the North British Locomotive Company , the largest locomotive manufacturer outside the USA.
