Nelly Island is an island off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is the largest and most easterly of the Frazier Islands in Vincennes Bay .
Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) from February 1947 were used to map them. The island was first set foot on January 21, 1956 by scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions , who set up an astronomical observation station here. It is named after the giant petrel , also known as Nelly , to whose breeding grounds the island belongs.
