Martin Moder

Martin Moder (born January 10, 1988 in Vienna ) is an Austrian molecular biologist , author of popular science books and part of the science cabaret group Science Busters .

life and work

Moder studied microbiology and genetics at the University of Vienna and completed his master's degree in molecular biology at the Institute for Molecular Biotechnology ( IMBA ) in 2014 , where he carried out brain tumor research on fruit flies . From 2014 to 2017 he carried out research on rare hereditary diseases for his dissertation at the Center for Molecular Medicine ( CeMM ) and successfully completed his doctorate in 2018.

His first contact with science communication was as a long-term tutor in the Vienna Open Lab. In 2013 Moder took part in a science slam for the first time in Graz , won it and was elected the first European science slam champion in Copenhagen in 2014 . His first book “Two molecules meet in the laboratory” deals with a wide range of topics in molecular biology and was published in September 2016 by Ecowin Verlag . His second book "Genpoolparty" deals with human optimization and was published in February 2019 by Hanser Verlag .

Moder is an active member of the Society for Critical Thinking (GkD), the Viennese regional group of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP) and devotes himself to the clarification of genetic engineering and medicine myths through lectures and television appearances . In November 2016, Moder appeared on stage with the Science Busters for the first time and has been a regular member of the science cabaret group ever since.
